ขบวนการทางปรัชญาในศตวรรษที่ 18 ซึ่งมีลักษณะเด่นคือความเชื่อในพลังของเหตุผลมนุษย์และการปฏิรูปหลักการทางการเมือง ศาสนา และการศึกษา คานท์นิยามว่าเป็น "การหลุดพ้นของมนุษย์จากภาวะที่ต้องพึ่งพาผู้อื่นทางความคิด" (Immaturity) พร้อมกับคำขวัญว่า "Sapere aude" (จงกล้าที่จะใช้ปัญญา)
