English Definition
A distinction in epistemology most famously associated with John Locke. Primary qualities (e.g., size, shape, motion, number) are intrinsic to the object and exist independently of the observer. Secondary qualities (e.g., color, sound, taste, smell) are powers in the object to produce sensations in the observer and do not resemble the objects themselves.
